Since Slade is a group of writers (though Jay Clarke is the primary voice among them), the books have a unique style and are stuffed to the brim with historical detail. He's also done a few books outside of that series, which I own but haven't read yet. "Ripper", which is book 3 in his 'Special X' series, is my favorite that I've read so far.
